Financial Preparations
- Consider applying for financial assistance through the hospital or physician providing your care. You can apply and may qualify even if you have health insurance. Start this process by contacting the provider’s billing department.
- Talk with your health insurance provider and the provider’s billing department to discuss associated costs and any subsequent bills. You can also request an estimate from many hospitals and healthcare providers.
- If you don’t have health insurance, ask the provider’s billing department whether you might qualify for a “self-pay discount.”
- Check if you need prior authorization from your health insurance provider for any part of your treatment and/or procedure. You can do this by talking with your insurance provider.
Reminders
- Contact your health care provider with any questions prior to your procedure. This is a great time to discuss expectations with your doctor, physician’s assistant, nurse practitioner, or nurse about what to expect after the procedure.
- Make a recovery plan for after the procedure, e.g., transportation, meals, sleeping accommodations, medication retrieval, follow-up visits to the doctor, etc.
- Understand your rights as a patient
